In a spell-binding escape from reality, instrumental psych/prog mathematicians Yomi Ship are excited to announce the release of their fourth EP 'Of Agartha' on 30 September 2021.

Featuring pre-released singles 'Ice Drake' and 'Kawataro Spring', OF AGARTHA reflects the symmetry of the last release (Pyramids of Yonaguni 2019) with some of the tracks written around the same time. You can expect the usual sporadic nature in the songwriting, surrounded by a slightly more melodic backdrop. In a way, this EP closes the chapter on the current version of Yomi Ship.

“The dynamics throughout are breath taking as the compositions range from gentle and introspective to abstract with flurries into loudness. For a band firmly entrenched in the progressive category and without a defined genre attribute, they make fantastic use of repetition balanced with eclecticism.” - Sono Muerto

Q&A with Jarred, Jade and Nick

It's been two years since your last major release, the Pyramids of Yonaguni EP, how has the band's sound developed since then?

Jarred: Pyramids was definitely more of a psych rock record. Our new music feels a lot more intricate and prog. I guess our music tastes have evolved quite a bit over the last 3 years.

Jade: Our sound is always inspired by the music we’re listening to at the time, so with influences such as Meshuggah and the Contortionist we seemed to create heavier, lower riffs with more rapid time signature shifts. During Pyramid's we were listening to more psychedelic/ambient sorta stuff.

Nick: As a whole, our writing process didn't change that much. There's still the same sound/style of Yomi Ship that would make it recognisable to a regular listener. Perhaps the guitar and bass tones matured more than anything with a darker type of approach (lower tunings). I tried my hand at some basic percussion which is something that will definitely be expanded on for our next release.

Your recent singles (Ice Drake and Kawataro Spring) and EP artwork feature unknown worlds and mythical creatures from folklore. Is there a story behind them? What and where is Agartha?

Jarred: Our talented friend John D Salvatore is the one responsible for the amazing artwork. We wanted to go for a mythical fantasy vibe with the art because we thought it would look sick, and it sure does. Song names are usually always the last thing we think about.

Jade: The story developed after the songs were written, although “Agartha” (a fictional world within the centre of earth) has been a topic of interest to us for a long time. Our song names are based off of creatures that may have once lived in Agartha, and escaped into the real world, but we like to leave it up to your interpretation.

Nick: There's rarely a "set" story for any of our songs. We try to leave it up to interpretation of the listener. There is a hint at the fact that the singles are connected and on a larger spectrum connected to Agartha but again, it could all just be an individual meaning for someone else. Agartha is basically a mythical city/kingdom believed to be located in the centre of the earth and the two singles/creatures (Ice Drake + Kawataro) are mythical creatures with their own folklore unrelated to Agartha.

When the world opens up again, post pandemic, what would be your dream destination to take Yomi Ship on tour?

Jarred: Definitely Japan!

Jade: Japan for sure, their math rock scene is huge and a large majority of our song names refer to Japanese mythology.

Nick: Japan or Europe. I would hope they can appreciate it.

Who would be on your dream festival line-up?

Jarred: Too many bands to fit, but would love to play on the same lineup as Black Midi, Stereolab, Palm, This Heat and King Crimson.

Jade: Hiatus Kaiyote, Palm, Black Midi, Meshuggah and RATM to name a few!

Nick: How big is the festival? haha. 5 band plus including us would have to be;

-The Mars Volta (2002) (Headline), System of a Down (1999-2000), Slint, Black Midi, Yomi Ship (opener)

You have gained quite a dedicated following of fans who appreciate your unique sound. What can fans look forward to from Yomi Ship after this EP?

Jarred: After this EP we are bunkering ourselves down for our first album, which will probably have some ridiculous amount of songs on it and will also be released on vinyl. We will explore the themes of Agartha one more time before then though……..

Jade: We’ve been stepping more into math rock territory as of lately, and continue to experiment with polyrhythms. Keep your eyes peeled for a live studio session that’ll give you a glimpse of the new Yomi Ship sound.

Nick: We will be bunkering down with the intention of producing a full-length concept album. We also hope to make it our first official release on vinyl and should be a more mature sound exploring concepts we've toyed with on previous releases in more depth. We want to give ourselves the right amount of time to make sure this comes out how we envision it so don't expect anything for a little while haha
